After the Vector review lets try another overstable mid range, the Z Hornet. Hornet is more traditional than the Vector, so I can't fill this review with talk about gyroscopical design, different plastics used etc. So let's talk about the disc.
At first glance it looks like a fairly traditional overstable mid. A blunt nose, convex wing and a bead, though not a large one. The grip feels similar to the Buzzz, at least for a person who only occasionally throws Buzzzes. A pretty comfortable grip. The rim is a tad wider than in the Buzzz, but not much so. It gives an impression of a disc faster than for example the Roc. So how does it fly?
Well it flies fast. Based on my on tests it feels faster than Buzzz, Roc, Pain and Vector, and almost starts to approach slower drivers. Depengin on the player, other discs and style this is either a good or a bad thing. The flight is reminiscent of drivers in other ways too. When thrown hard the Hornet flies straight longer than a Vector, but still fades pretty hard and reliably at the end. This is repeated when thrown anhyzer, the Hornet rides the angle quite long and then pulls out at the end. And when thrown with hyzer it flies like you'd expect an overstable disc to fly. Vector and Pain (at least the GL ones I've tried) are still noticeably more overstable. In stability the Hornet sits somewhere between the MD1 and Vector, leaning more towards the Vector. For longer distances it should complement neutral mids like the Buzzz or MD2 pretty well.
On shorter throws however the Hornet tended to fly more overstable than I imagined. It seems to work best on a smaller range of distances, and longer ones at that, than most mids. For example the Roc will behave quite predictably on a wider variety of distances. It's not a huge difference, but noticeable.
I didn't have a chance to try it in heavy headwinds, but at least the gusts of Kuopio didn't really affect the flight. Crosswinds didn't bother it any more than other overstable mids and I wasn't afraid to throw it into a headwind. It did fade later into a headwind, and it's possible that a big hand and a stiff headwind will turn it flippy, but I'm not one of the people who'll have to worry about that.
Hornet is good at what it does. But personally I very rarely see a need to throw an overstable mid instead of another disc. If an overstable, faster than normal, and arguably more driver like mid sounds appetizing, go ahead and give it a go.
