Millennium doesn't release new models very often, and usually they're slow to go up in speed. Now they've at long last released a max rim width driver. Like Millennium discs on the whole, it's primarily aimed at more experienced players, the Quasar isn't an understable downwind maximum distance disc, but clearly a control driver for better players.
The plastic is a very nice blend of champ, not particularly stiff but it feels sturdy and is grippy. Bonus points for the glitter, the look fits Millennium's space them nicely. The rim is indeed max width and can cause problems for some. It doesn't fit my hand optimally, but is manageable. Rim depth is about equal with the Boss, so the grip isn't as thin as with a Katana or DD2. Dome is nice and slight, not totally flat but by no means big. Overall it has the familiar feel of a disc designed by Innova.
If the Quasar feels familiar in the hand, the flight part is a bit more special. Up till now all speed 13 drivers have had some pretty big problems when I've used them. They've always been either way too overstable to use for max d or way too unpredictable to control precisely. The Quasar is the first one that feels like a max speed control driver. The one I've been testing flies like a very fast, slightly seasoned PD or OLF, I could even call it a speed 13 Eagle-X. So it's not straight and neutral like a Sword. On a hard rip or into a headwind it turns a tad, but won't get out of control, and the fade at the end will bring back on line nicely without being a meathook. Powered down a bit it flies straight, holding it's angle nicely with a consistent fade at the end, but doesn't turn into a meathook even then. With a bit of hyzer it holds a nice steady long curve to the left. Surprisingly it also holds a very slight anhyzer angle for a long time before pulling out, especially on lower lines. This is the exact shot I use most with my PD, and now I can manage more distance or an even lower line. I happened to have a particularly good day once when testing the Quasar, and hit over 430' several times in a row.
If you like the Eagle, OLF or PD, but want more speed or distance, give the Quasar a try. The Quasar is long without requiring hitting the perfect angle or power. The Quasar is reliable and accurate without being too overstable. The Quasar is my new favorite speed 13 disc.
